Though the filmmaker has plenty of experience from his work on sci-fi favorite STARGATE: ATLANTIS, this comedy presents a reality-based look at relationships in the real world. YPF follows one night in the lives of four couples and one threesome. There's a pair on their first date, with a British bad boy (Callum Blue) trying to seduce his young coworker (Diora Baird). Meanwhile, a longtime couple (Kristin Booth and Josh Dean) attempt drastic measures to drag themselves out of their sexual rut. Though Mia (Sonja Bennett) and Eric (Josh Cooke) have ended their relationship, they try to reconnect on a physical level, but some old feelings resurface. Two close friends (Carly of POPULAR fame and writer Aaron Abrams) decide to add a new dimension to their relationship, but it turns out that there may be some emotions hidden beneath their buddy-buddy interaction. And finally, there's the awkward contact between two roommates at war (Peter Oldring and Ennis Esmer) who can only agree on the hotness of one of their girlfriends (Natalie Lisinska), but they decide to spend the night as a trio. YPF is fresh and funny, and it's hard not to identify with at least one of the pairings. The dialogue is witty, but it never feels rehearsed. Though most of the actors are unknown south of the Canadian border, each of them gives a heartfelt, genuine performance that should lead to more work in the future. [More]

  • Brutally honest and hilarious, YPF follows four couples (and one adventuresome threesome) through one night in pursuit of a shared goal: getting laid. But getting to the climax proves far more complicated than any of them imagined...
  • A hot young cast that includes Callum Blue (TV's Dead Like Me) and Diora Baird (Wedding Crashers) brings this smart, sophisticated and revealing story to life as each set of partners learns that hooking up can be f***ing crazy.

The cast tries but rarely achieves an authenticity of emotional intimacy, as if everyone knows they're going to be cut away from -- how else to say it? -- prematurely.

Actually a pretty staid affair, showing much less nudity than most R-rated films and coming down firmly, for the most part, in the pro-monogamy camp.

Neither as extreme nor, for that matter, as interesting as its troublesome title.

Its willingness to tackle common, yet squirm-inducing sexual predicaments with blunt, sometimes hysterical wordplay will certainly command attention.

YPF caused a minor sensation at last year's Toronto Film Festival, but I guess the chance to see Canucks even partially disrobed is a selling point up there.

The jarring skips required for clockwork peeks into each sexual narrative turn all the participants into reductive character sketches, spouting pithy one-liners and sporting ready-to-wear emotions on their sleeves.

It is, in short, a 'funny because it's true' comedy for adults, a potentially commercial film of the sort we should be making in this country. It has a sense of joy. No one in it ever contemplates suicide.

In truth, Canadian filmmaker Martin Gero's very funny and insightful feature debut is far less shocking than its detractors -- most of whom haven't even seen it -- would have you believe.

Like some of the erotic acts it purveys, Y.P.F. is pleasant rather than pleasurable.

There's too much talk and not enough action in the balance and eventually the straitjacket structure of the script is a schematic that grows tiresome.

Sorry, but intercourse is not the main course here. Instead, this is a literal sex comedy where laughs are sought, and often found, at every stage of the act, from 'foreplay' to 'afterglow'.
