Twilight Takes Potter's Old Spot

August 15, 2008
The surprising announcement yesterday by Warner Bros. that they've decided to move Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, the sixth installment of the popular and lucrative series, to 2009 to help fill their summer roster has sparked a lot of debate and speculation over the last 24 hours. Undaunted by any of it, Summit Entertainment announced today that they will move their anticipated adaptation of Stephenie Meyer's teen romance novel Twilight into the slot vacated by "Half-Blood Prince," upping the release date from the movie's original December 12 opening to November 21, the week before Thanksgiving. It will now be going up against Disney's animated movie Bolt which itself moved into the slot yesterday after Warner Bros.' decision.
Summit Entertainment said, "The new release date for 'Twilight' allows the studio to both bring the film to the written-series' enormous fan base sooner, and to present the film in more theatres prior to the holiday movie-going season where traditionally screen time for any popular film is limited."
"When Warner Bros. decided to move 'Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince' to the summer of 2009, we saw a unique opportunity to slot in our film which has been gaining tremendous awareness and momentum over the past several months," said Rob Friedman, Co-Chairman and CEO of Summit Entertainment. "We by no means are trying to fill the shoes of the incredible 'Potter' franchise for 2008, rather we are just looking to bring the fans of Stephenie Meyer's incredible book series the film as soon possible from a programming perspective."
Starring Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart in the thriller-romance, the film is directed by Catherine Hardwicke from a script by Melissa Rosenberg (Step Up). Karen Rosenfelt (The Devil Wears Prada), Greg Mooradian and Wyck Godfrey will produce along with Mark Morgan via his Maverick Films banner.
Twilight tells the story of 17-year-old Bella Swan (Stewart) who moves to the small town of Forks, Washington to live with her father, and becomes drawn to Edward Cullen (Pattinson), a pale, mysterious classmate who seems determined to push her away. But neither can deny the attraction that pulls them together ... even when Edward confides that he and his family are vampires. Their unorthodox romance puts her in physical danger when Edward's nemesis comes to town and sets his sights on Bella.

I for one am not interested in Twilight. (From what i've heard) its just a love story between a Vampire and Mortal. Sure, the kid who played Diggory in the HP 4 movie is in it, but he looks overly feminate (excuse my spelling)and not very vampiresque. People rave about the books, but then again, its probably mostly for an out of the norm female crowd who loves anything to do with vampires.

Blah... another vapid cliched "vampire" film for the teenage female crowd. How about someone picking up that spec script "Silver Strike" from some years ago. Described as "Black Hawk Down" meets Werewolves, it sounds like it could be cool if done right. Maybe get John McTiernan to direct.

Twlight's fan group is like 98% made up of girls.

why did Harry Potter have to move and put this garbage in it's spot?!!!

Twilight is for the girls...could be huge. Remember Titanic and Leomania?

you've obviously never read the books and/or a guy...so I wouldn't judge. However, I'm sure this is going to make the fans go CRAZY

I'm sure my brain cells would implode if I ever read any of the Twilight books. And yes, I'm a guy, but I also enjoy romance when it's done correctly. As far as I can tell, Twilight is far from anything resembling quality. Give me The Time Traveler's Wife any day.

I'd say this is a bad move. HP has the bigger following.

Twilight doesnt seem too good,
i mean i like catherine hardwick and what i read of the bok was good, but sometimes people can mess up the book to movie thing, and make what could have been amazing to something classified as looking like some pre-teen girls fantasy.
i might watch it on dvd,

Man, I bet the ladies with you losers are REALLY happy....seems whenever there is a movie that appeals to a female audience you automatically berate it. Yeah, your women(providing you even have one) are a lucky lot. Its possible to like both Harry and Twilight...open your damn mind.

I've read all of the Twilight books (and I'm a guy). The first and last ones are the best and are really good. The third one was pretty good, though it had its problems. The second one was awful. But whoever said that the books have action either need to re-evaluate their definition of action or read a book that has actual action in it. The Twilight books HINT at action, but rarely ever do they show it. In every book, Stephenie Meyer found a way to get around showing any action scenes whatsoever (which made the end of the final book come off almost anti-climactic).
Not to mention the books are filled with typos and grammatical errors and are written like Vampire fan-fiction. They're nowhere near the brilliance of Harry Potter, but I do admit that, at the very least, they are entertaining and I can see how people enjoy them, specifically females.

I'm so glad to hear I'm not the only person not interested in Twilight, it's taken my school by storm and people are annoying. I don't care and I'd much rather see Harry Potter then Twilight.

not hating on twilight cause i have not read it buuut... kinda sounds like a story from Buffy the Vampire Slayer.. except less badass (since there's no slayer and no Angel)

Oh geez, just stop the bashing. I'm a fan of both HP and Twilight. Yes I'm female; no I'm not a teen. I'm a 23 yr old mother. Both movies will do well when they're released. What most of you seem to forget is that it was the Warner Bros decision to move the release date for HP. Twilight didn't force it to move. Duh! Plus, another movie grabbed that date slot too, so just stop it. You want to bash on someone or something, then do it to the production companies, not the movies themselves.

I'm sorry to see that HP 6 was moved to next summer, but whatever makes them more money I guess. Not really dying to see the movie anyway since the books have all been better by a lot so far.
On topic though, I have read Twilight and it's sequels. I've got the last book but can only stand to go halfway through it because honestly, it's terrible. The reason it's so popular right now is because people are starved for good literature. The movie isn't going to be great, it isn't even going to be very good, but I can respect that some people just love the "romance" (more like obsession).
If you want something worthwhile to read that's actually interesting try World War Z. It's a horror novel, there's no romance, but it's far and away the best book I've read this summer.

excuse me but twilight is not garbage. how would you even know if you don't know anything about it? judgmental people seriously need to grow up i swear.
