Peter Derns (Timothy Hutton), a recently divorced junior executive at a successful cookie company, decides to hire a temp when things at the office get too hairy. Enter Kris (Lara Flynn Boyle), the new secretary who seems to do no wrong. Peter is extremely grateful when Kris rescues him from some potential office disasters, but he begins to feel that he's in danger when it appears that her fierce loyalty to him is leading her to do away with some of his superiors in strangely bloody fashion. This dark satire veers recklessly between nasty horror and knowing office comedy, doling out laughs and shocks in equal measure. [More]

Reviews for The Temp
As written by Kevin Falls and directed by Tom Holland, The Temp starts well and runs into trouble about midway through.
The gimmick of The Temp runs dry really fast and is not worth investing the time to see what happens.
The Temp is a wholly ridiculous little thriller, yet it repeatedly goes above and beyond the ‘so bad it’s good’ realm.
The Temp manages to involve and entertain in a crafty B-movie way even if what it is is only a fraction of what it promises.
As another entry in the 'don't-trust- anyone' paranoia thrillers that have taken over the fright genre of late, The Temp is one of the dumbest.
Some of the movie plays as if it were intended to be tongue-in-cheek, but other parts are played straight, making it appear that Holland and his screenwriter Kevin Falls couldn't make up their minds about what sort of movie they wanted to make.
The Temp is as unimaginative as thrillers get, with a plot-by-numbers script and insipid direction.
