"Penguins," "Murderball," and 13 Other Docs Vie for Oscar Eligibility

Variety's Award Central brings news on the 15 documentary films that have been "shortlisted" for Academy Award consideration. (And there are 2 seriously egregious omissions, if you're asking me.)

In addition to this year's doco favorite, "March of the Penguins," "After Innocence," "The Boys of Baraka," "Darwin's Nightmare," "The Devil and Daniel Johnston," "Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room," "Favela Rising," "Mad Hot Ballroom," "Murderball," "Occupation: Dreamland," "On Native Soil: The Documentary of the 9/11 Commission Report," "Rize," "Street Fight," "39 Pounds of Love" and "Unknown White Male" round out the semifinalists.

Announcement caps a lucrative year for nonfiction films, with Warner Independent Pictures' "Penguins" waddling its way to $76 million domestically, making it the second-highest-grossing doc after last year's "Fahrenheit 9/11." Paramount Classics' "Ballroom" grossed more than $8 million, while "Murderball," "Enron" and "Rize" all have passed the $1 million mark.

Absent from the semifinalists' circle are Werner Herzog's acclaimed "Grizzly Man" and comedy docu "The Aristocrats," which have grossed more than $3 million and $7 million, respectively.

My pick goes for Rize. One of the absolute best movies I have ever seen.

My pick goes to "Darwin's nightmare". One of the most depressing docus I've ever seen, but such an eye-opener... Everybody should see this one. Haven't seen "Rize" yet.

I've only seen three of those (Murderball, March of the Penguins, and Enron), and they're the three worst documentaries I've seen all year. And I've seen quite a few documentaries this year.

I'd like to have seen Up for Grabs get a nomination, as it's one of the best docs I've ever seen. Certainly one of the most purely enjoyable.

All the proceeds for Favela Rising go back to the
When you talk about documentary surely we mean something other than giant multiplex family films. Many of these films are labor or love. I understand the Daniel Johnston film was ten years in the making, and Favela Rising is by a first time director giving all the proceeds to the Rio neighborhood the movie was filmed in. I hope the Academy doesn't reward only the big grossers.
