Dr. Ian Malcolm (Jeff Goldblum) returns for more dino-horror when, four years after the disaster at the would-be amusement park, another expedition is mounted by millionaire John Hammond (Richard Attenborough). To document the natural behavior of the beasts at a mysterious Site B, Hammond sends a team comprising Malcolm; Malcolm's girlfriend, paleontologist Dr. Sarah Harding (Julianne Moore); and a wildlife videographer (Vince Vaughn). They face adversity in the form of a less-than-scrupulous big-game hunter (Pete Postlethwaite) and, of course, the terrible lizards themselves. The film is loosely based on Michael Crichton's novel THE LOST WORLD, which was named after the 1912 Sir Arthur Conan Doyle novel of the same name. Spielberg proved his determination to alternate making socially conscious films with directing movies of sheer entertainment value; his prior film to THE LOST WORLD was SCHINDLER'S LIST, and he followed the dinosaur adventure with AMISTAD. The film is essentially a grab bag of sequences tied together by a minimal storyline that allows several abandoned scenes from the first book to reach the screen

This summer's blockbuster to beat is beach reading for the big screen, and why should it be otherwise?

The dinosaur creations are even better than those in the first film --- credible, breathtaking and frightening. As for the rest, every department pales by comparison.

More turns out to be less in this lacklustre sequel, though once again the effects are a thrill to behold.

The Lost World is like painting by numbers -- you get something that looks pretty good, but there's no creativity in getting there.

'm certain the fault lies in me, not Spielberg. I'm sure he doesn't care what I think, he still gets to keep the money.

If you liked Jurassic Park, you’ll probably like this one a little less. What the first film did poorly, this film does worse.

The story, it must be said, is no great shakes, although it's not half bad by action-movie standards. But the action -- that's why we go see movies like this -- is terrific.

Almost awesome in its up-close encounter with wild and very dangerous dinosaurs.

The Lost World has the vibe of 'obligatory sequel,' just what director Steven Spielberg probably wanted to avoid.

Spielberg amply delivers the goods with...The Lost World: Jurassic Park, a beautifully crafted series of nightmarish set pieces with no other goal in mind than to scare and delight the audience.

Special effects demand dino closeups, but the technical miracles seem sadly mundane.

If Jurassic Park reminds us of the magic Hollywood is capable of, The Lost World shows us how quickly we get bored.
