Lorenzo di Bonaventura Talks G.I. Joe, Beverly Hills Cop 4, More
by | June 24, 2009
Blog Article | Discuss Article
Summary

Megaproducer Lorenzo di Bonaventura is always busy with potential blockbusters -- and given that his slate now includes this summer's "G.I. Joe" as well as "Beverly Hills Cop 4," a new Jack Ryan movie, and an adaptation of the Warren Ellis graphic novel "Red," he's got more than usual to discuss. Back to Article

I have to say I'm still looking forward to this. The TV clip of the suits ain't so bad. It's growing on me. At least I know enough to expect those suits now, anticipate that they're going to be part of the story. And, honestly, my criteria is majorly that I would like one myself. Yup. Looks fun.

G.I. JOE is going to be a heap of crap. And everyone will eat it up.

Yeah, but I'd say the same about the previous TRANSFORMERS...just my lowly opinion.

No way, this movie looks pretty cheesy from the trailers

Personally, I think the old 80s animated movie will be better than this.

There are many problems with the accelerator suits; I won't attempt to cover them all here, but this is my biggest gripe: it essentially removes the visual advantage of Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes. In other GI Joe media, they're cool because their brand of combat is totally unique compared to the other members of their respective teams. Give everybody an accelerator suit that turns them into flipping martial artists and they've lost a lot of what gives them a unique edge.

Of all the movie's problems, however, the accelerator suits are just a drop in the bucket - it's a Stephen Sommers vehicle, and I can only hope that it will be his last.

Hey Bob S.,

Maybe Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes are using accelerator suits as well and are even further enhanced. Perhaps the suits provide exponential increases, meaning that it would exaggerate differences between two different people even further.

Even if they aren't using suits... they're ninjas. They can do whatever they want.

I've actually heard the accelerator suits are hardly in the movie, they are mostly just seen in that street battle you see in the trailer... but yeah this still looks bad with the horrible one liners and the acting looks pretty awful. "From The Director of Van Helsing" pretty much sums this up.

LOL, I thought VAN HELSING was a failure at every level, and that not even average moviegoers liked it in the least. But then again, Stephen Sommers doesn't have much to brag about in his filmography.

As far as the accelerator suits, the less the better, but didn't they also have them in that scene where they try and stop the Baroness and the mask-less Storm Shadow from destroying the Eifel Tower?

I agree that the less we see of them the better. Especially for the ninja reason. And I think the costume thing is okay... they actually look pretty dang cool all in black... it's just a shame it's been done a hundred thousand times. I understand the visual reasons, but whatever. I don't hate Van Helsing, or the first Mummy, and I think a movie about toy line with a comic writer might suit this director's style just fine. My expectations are low and I certainly don't expect it to be great, but it might be fun.

I think that if you engage this one on the level it was meant to be engaged -- a nice way to enjoy a few bong rips -- it might be a successful film.

I grew up with GIJ but I have no attachment to any of the characters. To me, this franchise isn't so important that if they mess it up it'll bother me. So long as the end result is in some way enjoyable (even like in the way The Mummy 1 was) I'll be happy.
