Last fall Anthology presented Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra’s idiosyncratic, minimalist Dojng Quixote adaptation, Honor de Cavalleria (Quixotic), one of the most striking films in recent memory. Now Serra has turned his unique vision on another well-known story, the biblical tale of the Three Magi and their journey to pay tribute to the newly-born child Jesus, once again transforming this highly familiar narrative into an appreciation of the human body, a study of figures in a landscape (this time shot in gorgeous black-and-white), and an experiment in cinematic duration. A deceptively simple, gently comical, and often disarmingly beautiful expression of wonder and spiritual faith, reminiscent of Rossellini’s The Flowers of St. Francis, Birdsong is a radiant film. --copy; Anthology Archives [More]

Reviews for Birdsong
Birdsong’s hard-core adherence to such rigorous aesthetics is strictly for the true believers, but they will be rewarded tenfold.
The lovely and strange Birdsong (El Cant dels Ocells) is less a retelling of the Nativity story than a dream about it.
Mostly engrossing for patient viewers who'll be able to truly appreciate the seemingly simple, minimal narrative and to sense the wealth of emotion and complexities lurking beneath it.
Catalan filmmaker Albert Serra is an artist whose work inspires more thinking than philosophizing.
a work of faith that treats the tenants of its story with as much respect as it treats the medium in which it operates.
