Sacha Baron Cohen Commits to Two Starring Roles
Prepare to walk on the brown side, schantineux!
by Jeff Giles | September 05, 2007
Discuss Article
He's kept a relatively low profile since testing the boundaries of comedy with Borat last year, but all that's about to change -- Variety reports that Sacha Baron Cohen has chosen his next two starring roles.

First up is the long-discussed Bruno, which will find Cohen returning to his Ali G Show stable of characters for the third and final time -- this time, to play the titular flamboyant Austrian fashion reporter. Ali G fans will know what to expect: namely, more awkward and uncomfortable situations, mixed in with plenty of gay innuendo and the constant threat of physical violence. In other words, similar to Borat, only with German (and/or fake German) slang instead of references to Kazakhstan. Less sexytime, more schwanzenstuck and poopenschaft.

According to the Variety report, Cohen has also committed to a remake of Francis Veber's Le Diner de cons, about a group of prominent businessmen who compete to see who can bring the biggest idiot to their weekly dinner. The remake, titled Dinner for Schmucks, will be directed by Austin Powers director and Susanna Hoffs spouse Jay Roach.

Cohen has actually been attached to both of these projects for some time -- we reported on Schmucks last November -- but the latest Variety report references "months of vacillating and speculation," so there must have been some questions behind the scenes.

Cohen's next two projects will be a supporting role in Tim Burton's Sweeney Todd and a production credit on the bambino he's expecting with fiancee Isla Fisher.

Over-rated and not as funny as he believes he is IMNSHO.

Borat was funny, but not as funny as everyone in the media would have you believe. Still, I'd like to see him do another character. This next one sounds funnier.

Bruno's bit on the show got old rather quickly. I hope they can keep it up for an hour and a half. (that's what she said)

Bruno is by far Sacha's worst character on Da Ali G Show. Probably wouldn't pay to see an all Bruno movie.

Bruno is good, but gets annoying really quickly. He is able to coax a lot of crazy stuff from people, a la Borat, though.

I'm glad we'll be seeing more of Cohen- god only knows he's ACTUALLY funny and much more of a comedian than the mentally handicapped Will Ferrell and Jon Heder. Steve Carrell still isn't as funny as Cohen, but at least he honestly tries- and can- be funny in a real way.

I'd love to see Cohen do a dramatic role in a few years, as it would be curious to see how well he could pull it off. True comedians IMO have the best chance at doing drama than anyone else, due to the amount of detail they have to pay to body language. Robin Williams is able to do it, so it'd be great to see Cohen succeed in it as well.

No, it's a different sort of character. He interviews people in the fashion industry and asks questions that make them look either a) stupid, b) incredibly shallow, or c) bigoted. It's an effective character but it can get annoying quickly. Also, I can't see people going out in droves for a Bruno movie like they did with Borat. He just doesn't have that type of wide-audience appeal.

I'm a little worried about Cohen and Carell. They are two of the funniest comedic actors, but I'm afraid they will make bad choices and disappear.

Bruno seems to much like like a Borat knock-off,but Dinner with Smucks seems okay. Himas Freddie Mercury might be awesome,though...

The thing with Carell though is even when he miss steps with stuff like Evan Almighty he'll always be brilliant as Michael Scott.

How is he going to pull it off? Borat worked because no one in America knew who Borat was. Now, it will be impossible for him to pull that exact same trick again.

Cohen is way over-rated. I was a fan of his TV show, but i thought Borat sucked. And did anyone see the Ali-G character based movie? Man, that was bad.... unless you were extraordinarily stoned, but everything is funny then. I won't see any more movies he is in, especially after Ricky-Bobby.

Borat had it's funny parts but it eventually got to the part where it was just uncomfortable to watch and offensive... i am not going to lie, i still enjoyed it.... it was funny for what it was.... but yeah, it was kind of overrated.

Regardless of whether you like his humor or not, you people have to admit that Cohen is a very very talented actor. Some people play the part in movies, if they mess up its just another take... he actually becomes the part. There are a few other comedians who do this (like stephen colbert and john stewart) and I think they are much better actors than the vast majority of hollywood.

I don't see your problem with Cohen. He does some pretty funny stuff, in my opinion, and I'm glad to see he's getting to make another movie. I hope it's as good as Borat...except in a different way, because funny as Borat was, no one wants a retread. Cohen will probably be able to pull it off, though; the man's more creative than most of us can dream of.

I have to agree with alot of people on this thread. Bruno had its moments, but I dont know if that character is funny enough for a full length movie. But I think Cohen has earned the benifit of the doubt thanks to Borat. If Bruno turns out to be even 50% as funny as Borat, itll be worth at least the price of a matinee movie.

Why is Borat done in America instead of the UK? Pretty simple people. It is all because no body knew who Borat was and who Cohen was. Things sure have changed since the movie came out. With all the interviwes and documentaries, every one who understands english knows Cohen's schtick of asking real people stupid questions and film their reactions.
