Macy plays a successful film critic who during a fight with one of his many ladies, accidentally murders her. Upon covering up his crime, he realizes that a private investigator (James Cromwell in a sinister turn) had been following the woman, snooping for her ex-husband. Meanwhile, the chief investigating officer for the police force (played by Adam Arkin) is an aspiring script writer whose wife gets involved with the critic. Suspicious of his home life, the critic's steady (Felicity Huffman) develops a scheme of her own. With twists at every turn, this made for cable noir is a throwback to the great detective pictures of the '40s. Macy co-authored the script with director Steven Schachter, based on a Donald E. Westlake novel. [More]

  • Slight Case of Murder, A (1999)
  • Popular New York film critic, Terry Thorpe (William H. Macy), finds himself in messy predicament when he accidentally kills his lover during a spat. He immediately covers up his involvement and leaves the apartment without knowing that a private investigator (James Cromwell) has been spying on the woman for her ex-husband. Realizing his opportunity, the investigator launches a plan to blackmail Thorpe. Meanwhile the police enter the picture and detective (Adam Arkin) targets Thorpe as the chief suspect while also trying to advance his own dreams of becoming a screenwriter. Thorpe's regular girlfriend (Felicity Huffman) becomes suspicious of all the strange activity as Thorpe tries desperately to cover up his own foul play and ward off all the bribing schemers trying to profit from his misfortune.

Macy, Arkin, Huffman, and Cromwell are clearly having a good time with this amiable little farce noir. Fortunately they're able to transfer much of that fun over to the viewer.

...a comedy-thriller that is really pretty nifty, with a topflight cast by television standards.
